I realize that those are cows in the picture, but the Department of Agriculture & Rural Development in the UK has initiated a program to give farmers a chance to
use UMPCs to increase their productivity. The program has seeded 56 farmers with UMPCs to evaluate how effective a tool they are for farmers. So far the results seem
very promising, an increase in both speed and accuracy.
Claire said: "Before the website was introduced, information from the poultry unit was posted or faxed to Moy Park.
"Now I can submit information, have it analysed and receive reports in a fraction of that time."
A DARD spokesman said: "The UMPC and wireless farmyard is an example of how modern technology can be used to cut down on the amount of time farmers spend recording, while giving them access to all the information they need to make quick, effective decisions.
"It has also greatly improved traceability of local produce along the entire supply chain from the egg to the chicken."
I can imagine the UMPC as a very convenient device for counting the number of eggs, reporting problems, and keeping everything organized. It's so much more powerful than a paper notepad in that you can use it to access current information and the data on it is in a much more permanent and readable format. The UMPC is also more convenient than a notebook or even a tablet because the size of the device makes it much easier to carry and use while standing up. If the farmers were using notebooks, they'd tend to first write the info down onto paper and then later enter the data on the notebook making it very easy for transcription errors or other mistakes.
I hope we see more of these types of programs in other parts of the world as well. There are a lot of unique situations that the UMPC is perfect for and we need more people out there experimenting with them and really coming up with fascinating ideas on how UMPCs can make our lives more productive.
