Let me introduce you to the $300 UMPC, the Gecko from Norhtec. This little 7" clamshell design packs a 1.0 GHz VIA C7-M CPU, a 40GB hard drive and up to 1GB of DDR2 RAM. It's been designed by the same folks who won the OLPC contract, Quanta, and is ear-marked to be used in the developing world. The Gecko runs Linpus Lite which is based on Xorg and in my mind resembles the version of Linux on the eeePC with tabs titled: Internet, Work, Learn, Play and Settings.
This photo is from a preview of the Gecko by staff at Norhtec's Nigerian office. Nigeria has been identified by Norhtec as an area for major development and they think that the $300 Gecko is just the UMPC for the job. With its great battery life and low cost it's going to let Nigerians get online and get productive now.
